Warning: Not-really graphic violence
The forest burned around the pack. An unusually white she-wolf, was covered in soot and ash, searched for an opening in the flames. Her mate, who was as black as the night sky, was nearly hidden in darkness as he tried to keep the rest of the pack from panicking, while trying to calm himself.
A tiny, dark pup tried to get to the she-wolf. Her son. His sister, who was a light gray, nipped at his ear with a whine, her sky blue eyes, identical to their mother, pleaded with him to stay beside her. Their other sister, the smallest and most silent was huddled into a little ball.
Their cousin, a yearling brown male, who was supposed to be guarding them, shook on the ground in terror. He cried for the protection of his own mother, who had been the first to detect -and be killed by- the fire.
As the flames moved inward, the yearling let out a cry and flung himself in. He had thought he had spotted an opening. A wail went through the pack at the acrid smell of burning fur and flesh.
Slowly, more and more of the pack were devoured. The white wolf grabbed her pups and pushed them inside the former den. She hid them in the farthest corner, and after giving them one last lick, she returned to the surface world.
After what seemed like days (and were), the sound of strange voices filled the tiny, malnourished pups ears. A hairless, strange figure pushed its way through their haven. It let out a bark, and grasped the three pups. They couldn't fight it.
They returned to the surface world, to see where had once been their loving pack, now were strange creatures who stood on their back legs. They were put into a small-den like structure and were hefted into the back of a metal monster. |

Snowfire groaned as she felt gentle prodding of a cold, wet nose on her side. Squinting very slightly, she lifted her muzzle and nipped the larger one hovering above her. She heard a yelp and felt satisfied, before the whining started.
"Snow! Why are you so mean?! Boss is calling, ya furball!" Opening her eyes, Snowfire leapt to her feet, her glossy white fur glowing in the early morning light. She looked at her brother, his deep dark fur stealing the light around him. His red eyes peered at her in annoyance.
"I'm coming, Onyx! Now where is Brooke?" The young she-wolf snapped, as she hurried beside the black wolf.
Onyx huffed, "She's already there, of course! Boss's pet . . ." Snow chuckled softly at her brother's annoyance, however she quickly stopped, before lengthing her pace as she heard Boss in the distance.
The siblings broke stopped in front of Boss's den-opening, or as he called it, his door. Before Snow could begin yipping, Boss wrencedch open the door, grabbing her collar and Onyx's, dragging them into his den.
A pretty, light gray she-wolf already sat inside, her sky egg blue eyes identical to Snowfire's own, although with a little less light. She sprang to her feet, but made no move to go towards them, her chain collar and leash securing her decison.
Boss hooked up Onyx and Snowfire to the leashe, and after giving them each a slap over the head, the large, hairless Up-Walker disappeared into his food-place, where his mate, pup, and some strange Up-Walker waited.
Snowfire groaned, licking her paw as she glared at her larger sister, "Brooke! Why didn't you wake us?! Now Boss is mad at us!" She flopped down on the ground.
Onyx started up his own whining as well, and as they fought, the Up-Walkers were deciding their fates . . .

Boss, or as the Up-Walkers called him, Billy, sat at his table, his long, thick legs pushing into the top. His mate, Jenny, a twig, her long red and gray hair tied in a braid, smiled sweetly at her nearly grown son and the strange, thin man beside him. She hurried to get them their coffee when the kettle started squealing. She had all of the men mugs before sitting quietly in her own chair.
Jamie, the only son of from the union of Jenny and Billy, had a his father's gold hair and his mothers curls. The curls hung around his boyish face, giving him a very sweet, childish appearance, enhanced by his sweet blue eyes. He sipped his coffee, and watched his father sucker up to the smallish man that sat beside him.
"Hank, I know I don't got no hosses faw ya, bud ya can't take 'way ma dawgs. I swear I'll give ya your Quarter Hosses ba next month, bu' no uns come up ear in a-" Billy was cut off by Hank.
"William, I needed the horses by today. Of the ten that were promised me, you only have four. So, I'm taking the wolves back to New Jersey, with the horses and your four best goats. You are lucky I don't take your redneck behind to court!" The man glared from beneath his thin brows. He wore a tailored suit, which looked odd in the farm house. He wistfully thought of his mansion back in Howell, with the thick trees and huge lakes and-
Jamie cleared his throat, "Sorry Pa, but if you owe this fella the horses, and you don't have him, he has the right to take the other 'amals, too."
Billy glared at his son, "Why did we eva le' you go to that school? Ya turned traitor on ma, boy!"
The boy flushed, looking down at his hands, while Hank smiled slightly at him, reasuring. Jamie smiled back shyly.
"Fine, take 'em an' go. A wanna get the first pups from all 'em, though!" Hank signed his name on the contract with a flourish, leaning back on his chair with a satisfied smile.
"Deal." |
