making an image transparent and lowering opacity are two completely different things. xD

there's too ways to make an image transparent, but the second doesn't always work. o:

the first way is to use the magic wand tool (or whatever it may be called on gimp), and highlight the background area, then push delete. if there's an option for the tool to show the border, unclick that, or it'll end up transparent.. but with an ugly frame-like border around the edges and the image itself (i don't know/remember if there's an option to show the border or not, as i no longer use gimp, so if there isn't, disregard that comment.)

the second way is to erase the white area, which is more complicated, unless you have a tablet.. and it'll only work if the background is on a separate layer.

you could also just delete the background layer altogether, but only if the background is on its own layer, and all the other layers are transparent already.

to lower the opacity of something, you have to first specify the tool you're lowering the opacity of (i.e., the pencil/brush tool), so the different marks made by the tool will overlap, and some will be darker than others.

yes, this post probably strayed off of what you were asking. xD oh well.

If you want to lower the opacity of a whole layer, there is a slider on the layers menu, right above the layers.

Deleting the background to create transparency will only work if the layer has an alpha channel. Background layers, layers created as white, and layers that were originally a JPEG or Bitmap probably need an alpha channel. Just right-click on the layer and click 'add alpha channel'.

thanks =]

i figured out that you can use eraser too! Set the eraser opacity to like 60, 'erase' the part you want transparent, and then voila!
