I stumbled across another game similar to SBF that calls itself *Edited* Linking to other games not allowed, and it gave me a few ideas.

I'd love to see graphics like that on SBF but reckon it would be pretty difficult to code. I'm not familiar with Flash software, but I reckon even just using an image map rather than a Flash picture would be pretty simple, and would be a huge step up from the grid of enclosures which we currently have, some of which don't even have pictures. Confused It would just require one picture, rather than several dozen, so would be easier on the artist, and would look fantastic. I'm not sure how you'd sort out getting the picture(s) to look right when the enclosures aren't built though. Would it be that big a deal if it couldn't be done?

Is anyone here familiar with Flash software/coding? How difficult would you reckon it would be to make an interactive Flash farm?

What does everyone else think? Would this sort of change to SBF's graphics be a good idea? Or would it just not be worth the trouble?

I am a website creator, and I've dealed with flash before, its pretty simple, but it just depends on the user of it. Im a little mentally challenged in that area but i can do it. but im sure it would take a long time for this site to get that kind of make over, yes it would be cool but also a little hard on the site admins. But i have an idea, if a buliding is unbuilt it doesn't have color. but also like i said that would be hard. I make them for everybody to veiw on my sites because if i had users then I'd have to make millions of them all different and it would take days for me to get somebody their buildings, idk if the orbis team could handle this even tho they are probably the best site builders ive ever seen, ive NEVER been this addicted to a site before. Also I kinda like the way sbf is it just needs some more pictures for buildings and stuff. If I were the orbis team I'd host a picture drawing/coloring contest for the players and use those on the buildings, it would be really neat i think.

An art contest to get the images for the buildings is a great idea, regardless of whether it's for the current setup or something like what I'm proposing.

And the idea of having the building black and white if it's not built seems a simple and effective solution, and I like it.

I agree though that my idea would require a lot of work on the part of the admins, and SBF doesn't tend to get much attention from the Orbis team, as compared with some of their other games, so it's not likely to happen quickly, if at all.

I have heard that flash is very simple to use, but having never used it myself I didn't feel I was really in a position to make a judgement call. Thanks for clarifying that point for me. Smile

Even if flash wasn't an option for this game I'm really warming up to the idea of an image map. I've put together one before, so I know even the complex ones are easy to do, just time consuming. I'm itching to code it myself actually, lol. I'm got all these ideas running around in my head about how to sort out selecting buildings, displaying the ones that aren't built, etc, special things to do when the mouse hovers over them and such. I wouldn't be able to do the artwork though, I'm not professional enough, although the general design is quite clear in my head.

Bleh... I hate it when I have an idea I can't act on. I have lots of fun coding these sort of things for websites, but it's far too big a job to waste my time on if it's not actually going to be used anywhere, even if it's just a fansite. Confused

I kno i hate that!!! lol. Flash is kinda easy to work with but to me anything that takes more than a week is either hard, or boring (i have short attention span sometimes... thats why you never see a long term project tern out good from me. if i have more than a week i blow it off or if it takes more than a week of like hour work aday im like this is pointless then i quit. lol so thats why i don't like flash very much if i were an admin id probly be begged not to help. lol. i feel like going crazy right now. sorry lol

For me a week long project involves working on it in every spare moment, so even that is a major project, lol. Smile

Drmchaser, are you still having that problem? If so, I think there's a drop down menu at the very top of the page that allows you to choose the language.

I hate to burst yall's bubbles but the only way to get this all passed on is to get the attention of an admin. Even if every active member wanted and was willing to work on it, we still need somebody who can do something. Although they haven't been very active in SBF lately, perhaps if somebody sent an email to John about this particular topic, the orbis worlds team would give us a spare look of the eye.

Thanks for the advice, Bezz. I might just do that. I'm quite keen on this.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I gave into temptation and went ahead and started making the art and code for this, just to see if I could do it. I'll post it on my farm page as I'm going along, so keep an eye on it if you're interested:

Just a reminder guys, linking to other games is not allowed. You can discuss them but any 'recruiting', including providing links, is not permitted on the game.

Kholran, the link I posted is kinda required since it demonstrates the idea which was the whole point of this thread. That particular link showed a page with an example of the graphics I was talking about. It was posted solely for these purposes, and not for any sort of recruitment campaign. If you insist that the link is not allowed then please provide a viable alternative. A screenshot is insufficient since it doesn't allow interaction, which was another of the major points I was bringing up.

The base for the art is up on my farm page. Still not complete, but the basic structure is there. Design and structure was inspired by my local zoo.

Let me know what you think.
