I've made a coloring tutorial to help all of you aspiring equine artists out there! Hope you enjoy Very Happy I use photoshop but you can use gimp or any other program too, the tools just might be named different things.

If you have any questions at all feel free to post them here or send me a pm. If you want to try it out there are several free lineart sites out there or if you want you can send me a pm and if you're lucky I might have one sitting around that I will let you use. I also have a horse drawing tut you can use to draw your own floating around here some where, pm me and I can send you the link.

Please post your pics here, I would love to see them!

Queso, this was very helpful and simple, unlike many others I've seen! Thanks so much for posting this!

Just wondering
(since I'm looking into Adobe Elements)
what do you use to make the mane and tail?
A regular brush as a small size?
Or is there like a 'hair' tool?
Thanks!

Choco: That looks great! My only suggestions would be to try and go in with a dark, slightly reddish, brown and beef up you shading under the belly and add a bit more under the neck. You're higlights are nice and correct, but I think you could still go in with an even lighter color (a light yellow?) to get more shine. Fantastic for a first try! Very Happy Keep up the good work!

Silver: I normally use a fuzzy edged brush and a normal small brush for doing manes and tails. There are sevral hair brushes, but I don't like them very much. Also, since you're thinking of buying it, if you buy a wacom tablet you get it for free. I don't know if you have one already, but its a good deal imo.

Really awesome, Queso! You have some serious artistic talent with these computers! I am going to try this with a bay QH when I have time. The Arab you did on here was really amazing. Keep up the great work!!

Good job for a first try Daisy. Next time try using a reference picture to see where to put your shadows and highlights. They look like you placed them pretty randomly to me. Try and imagine a light shining on the horse, the shadows would be under the parts that stick out and the highlights would be on the parts the light hits more directly. So you want to make the bottom of its neck and belly darker and the top of its hind quarters and belly lighter. Here are two good example pics:

Do you see what I mean? I can give you the links to some other great coloring guides if you want too Very Happy

Koneko- Have you tried it out yet? I would love to see what you create!
