I use GIMP.
It's excellent for just about everything. The only downside - that I've found - is its layout. There's a bunch of windows and it's kind of cluttered. Unlike a lot of free programs, it also gets updated and improved regularly. It's basically a free photoshop, though. ^_^ |

gimp and you only have a bunch of windows if you choose to use windows over tabs, i only ever use 2 windows, the menu and the one i have the picture in
its made by an organisation that dont like the corporate high prices on data products as an alternative to photoshop, and though the processes is different you can do almost everything you can in PS, and for the rest for what lacking functions it have those been replaced by other stuff from as far i get by functions unique to gimp
all my stuff is made in gimp, which really should talk for itself of the potential of the program, and i aint even the best user of gimp out there, so it should do more then well enough to serve most people on orbis games |

This is a new program that just launched not to long ago. I haven't really had the chance to play with it yet but it looks promising. It is completely online with nothing that you need to download, so it says. Though you need to create an account to use it. It is aligned with a photoshop contest site worth1000.com.

You can make manips like that with any program with layers.
It's not the program that makes the art - it's the user. Any product can work just as well as any other, so long as you understand it. Some just make it easier on the user.
For vectors or lineart, it's a different story. But for manips... It's the texts and brushes you have on your computer, experience and where you look for the images, not so much the program you're using. -shrug- |

that is not true, it takes a lot more to make something in programs like pain, word, power point etc
because the programs have limits to their functions, by no means is it imposible, but it requires a higher skill level, there are people who make art in paint by all means without layers even, that trumph anything you see on orbis games...but it requires a whole other level of skill..
the more functions a program have, the easier it is to make good art in it, so that is merely what i mean, gimp can contest with programs like photoshop in functionalities
and all that what you mention, fonts is the only thing that can work in any and all programs because fonts is installed in the computer not a program, everything else...well it totaly depend on the program, yes of course the end result will depend on the users skill and fantasy
but you really cant make brushed backgrounds if the programs dont have an option to include new brushes, you cant make layer or mask effects, if the program dont have layers or masks, you cant color evenly for a whole layer without a paintbucket that have more then one function (like the one in paint will only color one color at time, while in programs like gimp or PS you can color a whole picture to a hue or new color without loosing the picture)
so sorry the containt of the program, which filters and functions is part of the program do have something to say, from the soft brushes (which lacks in some lesser programs) to filters, coloration choises, linetools etc (try making good lines freehand on a mousepad, i am sure its posible, but it takes a lot more practise and skill then what i got)
so sure its up to the user to channelise the tools of the program, but you cant channelise tools you dont have and it takes more then layers, even if paint included layers it still wouldnt contest with gimp or PS, because layers is only part of it, I do not know what you do, but if i where to tally up the functions that gimp have which paint lacks, that i use only on a simple manip (not to mention the more elaborate ones) you would be talking dual numbers at least
its easy to take them for granted after a while, but try going back to paint and create something, and you will soon realise its more then layers you depend upon in graphic programs
basicaly compare it to musicans and their instruments, an expert can make music on the cheapest most untuned instrument really because they can adapt it so that they compose something that still sound good, for the normal musican though the combination of their skill with that of the quality of the instrument will descide how something sound. |

In my opinion, paint is nowhere as good as Gimp or any other image editing program with layers, as your abilities are very limited. Paint.net and Photobie are also some free, less well known image editing programs. But Gimp is probably my favourite as I don't have photoshop |
