First of all, how many people do you run across playing animal games that are in favor of animal cruelty?
I mean, really, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
But I am definitely, 100 % against animal abuse, cruelty, anything that involves pain to an animal of any kind. |

I'm very against cruelty/abuse/mistreatment to ANY animal - While animals are truly defenseless, having no voice to complain with, there are millions of people worldwide in equally appaling situations...
Sometimes I really hate that we are such a "superior" species...Because if you really think about it, which species condones the cruel treatment of its fellows based on age, race, gender, spiritual belief, geographical location, speech, lifestyle choice or sometimes, for no gosh danged reason at all? PEOPLE.
Which species goes to war for petty issues like those above, killing thousands of innocent victims ( both human and animal alike ) for personal gain? PEOPLE.
Which species has individuals that torment others for the fun of it? PEOPLE.
Which species has individuals that believe themselves better than another creature because they walk upright and can string a sentance together....?
Superior species my butt
Sometimes I can't even watch the daily news because I'm so sickened by the actions of some people against not only animals, but other people...And what does it say about us as 'evolved' creatures that we let it continue?
Sorry to be all ranty...I tend to er...rant about things I think are important...
I just got finished reading an article about the slaughter of thousands of foals, by-products of the PMU industry...I won't post links because its heartbreaking and some are graphic...But if you, or anyone you know uses a HRT called Premarin.....Do some research into where it comes from... |

Well said =D And you deserve to rant on this topic.
Agreed. Premarin is awful. *shudders*
Male chicks are also by-products of the dairy industry as well. They're thrown in the garbage and suffocate under the mass of other male chicks. Chickens supposedly go through the worst treatment. |

Yeah. This guy who lives close to my grandparents trains his horses by making them lay down to show them whos boss. He does this by piling SAND bags ontop of their backs!! He'll offer to train some of my grandpa horseys who are frirndly but not ridable. And my grandpa really cares so he said no. go grandpa!! |

I am definitely against all kinds of animal cruelty! I am even a little skeptical of Thoroughbred racing! They race the horses at two years old! My instructor doesn't normally put her horses under saddle until they're 3 or 4!
Chickens do go through the worst treatment though. My parents don't like for me to go thru the details online or anything so i don't know as much as I could. I am a vegetarian and most people don't understand me at all so I'm glad there's other people out there like me! |

Throughbred racing is not that bad. Your instructor may have the luxury of waiting to train their horses at age 3 or 4 but take into account the price of feed and stableing. Boarding (Feed not included) costs upward of three hundred dollars a month in a nice barn. Now take into account that a Throughbred farm, while not boarding their horses, may have upward of a hundred head. Take the cost of feed (which is much higher than for a normal pleasure horse because of the special blends they are being fed) hay costs (upward of eight dollars a bale in the Tri-State area now because of the drought) the number of grooms and other staff, and the cost of purchasing one of these horses. Now take into account the fact that each horse has a very large and roomy stall and is treated as if it were a prince or princess. (Many of these horses have air conditioning, a pet and when at the track a personal groom.) Now Tell me about your trainers horses. My guess is they will work until they are upward of 15 years. Throughbreds work until they are about 5 and are then retired. Please look at what you're comparing as well. Horses bred and raised to run versus pleasure or jumping/dressage horses (which are oftentimes crosses). Your trainer may wait until the horses are 3-4 but most professionals reccommend training a horse to take a humans weight as a yearling. Many people will then let their horses run free for another couple of years before training them to jump or do other more disciplined activities. It is hundreds of times easier to train a yearling (who will not be fully grown and therefore not to full strength and will not have as many bad manners) than a 3-4 year old (especially if the 3-4 year old has been let run loose in the usual method of "letting them mature") |

I'm sorry, but I completely disagree.
If you're concerned about spending money, DON'T GET HORSES. It's really quite simple.
Horses are put under tremendous strain by being forced to go at speeds exceeding that of most fully grown breeds. Their joints are ruined and before breaks, fractures and/or injuries heal, they are forced to run on them once more. The trainer's excuse? "It makes them heal FASTER."
If you broke your leg, would you be training for a marathon within three weeks? I doubt it. You're buying your food. You're paying rent for your house or paying bills. Spending money but not running. Horses can't go to work. It's not their fault.
Many horses are seen as money-making machines with no feelings, as are 90% of any animal in the entertainment industry. Anything trainers could do that could even remotely be seen as caring for their well being is done so that people won't complain, and so that horses don't simply collapse.
They do not GET to retire at 5 years old. They HAVE to. The speed and intensity of their training and racing, not to mention how young they were when they started, forces them to. Not only that, but once they can't race, they are either breeding machines or sent to slaughter. Famous racing horses are thrown out once they can't make money. Man O War was found in a backyard breeder's hands, shriveled up to almost nothing.
Horses are whipped on their necks in the race, because it makes them run faster and because it's easier than reaching backwards. They're treated cruelly if they lose, but I won't go into depth as I don't want this topic getting deleted.
(I would like to point out that there is a difference between 'taking human weight' and intensive training. At TWO YEARS OLD, Thoroughbreds are running laps at top speed and coming off the track lathered in sweat in the middle of winter. There is a HUGE difference between that treatment and walking around a lounge ring a few times in weather-appropriate arena with a rider or weight on it's back.)
I cannot see how you can see Thoroughbred racing as 'not being that bad.' |

I think that's enough. Now we're hitting rants.
Yes, some things are definite cruelty, others are people's opinions.
The thread gets locked now. |
