Just wondering if anyone in here has heard of this. I was told of this many, many years ago, probably by my grandma but not really sure.
If an owl hoots outside your window at night it means that someone you know will die
Now, please forgive me, I'm not trying to be morbid or gory or scare anyone. In fact, I'm not a superstitious person at all. But I do know that sometimes there are signs and symbols in "nature" that we can't explain.
I said all of this to relate this to you. Last night, I know it was very late just not sure of the exact time (I didn't look up at the clock because, honestly, I thought it was my imagination. It happened so quickly) But I heard an owl hoot just once. It was in the big maple tree outside my window. Then, I thought I heard it flap it's wings as it flew back over to the small mountain nearby.
Now, the last couple years we have heard these two owls in the summer time in early evenings over there hooting at each other. I think they may be Great Horneds. Well, anywho, they've always stayed over on the small mountain in the woods.
Well, we came home from church and my grandma (Mom's mom, a different one. The other was Dad's) called. My mother's cousin's husband passed away last night sometime .
Now, as I said, I'm not superstitious. But things about the whole "incident" with that owl last night just seemed... odd. I mean, how often would an owl only hoot one single time. Especially at this time of the year here *edited* |

I have heard this, in fact I've grown up with these kind of sayings/superstitions.
It is said that the owl is a harbinger of death.
Unfortunatly both times my family has heard a owl hoot a member of the family has died. So I do kinda believe.
There are so many different ones though. It could just have been a coincidence though. As it more than likely was. As I have heard owls recently and nothings happened....thankfully.
I do find it fascinating though |

I am not that superstitios, but I do think it's nice to listen to some of the superstitons out there. EDZ, I do think it is strange, maybe watch out for the owls, more, I guess. |

I've heard of that one! It's never happened to me so i don't know if i believe it or not. I'm not very superstitious though.
Something that i have always been confused about is weather it is lucky or unlucky for a black cat to cross your path? |

I'm 'here' too, EDZ and yes, I've heard it. I dread hearing an owl at night, I've always lost someone I know or someone close to me has lost someone they know when I hear one. Not even sure it's just the hearing of them, we had one flying around the parking lot at work one day and it circled my cousin several times before lazily gliding to the tree line to land. Several hours later she got a call her uncle had passed on, someone she was extremely close to. |

Pretty strange coincidence, perhaps.
I know that I have hears something similar about when a dog howls a certain way at night, also.
Myself, personally, I know that when I have dreams that contain certain things that things will happen not long later. I have had dreams of snakes or tornadoes and not many days later something devastating will happen.
Sometimes, I will dream about black dogs or cats and not many days later someone will die. I could share some of these that made more impressions on me. But I don't want to bore you.
Am I crazy? |

You guys have got to remember: all these things are the times when you heard an owl hoot and things did happen. I'm sure there are just as many folks out there that haven't had this happen to them. I, for one, have heard owls hoot several times outside my old home, and nothing bad ever happened. Dreams do creep me out, though. Sometimes, I get that sick feeling of deja vu, and then I remember that I'd recently had a dream exactly related to what I am doing now. I personally think it's just a mind trick; say, if I'm brushing my hair and I'd had a dream about that in the past. Well, of course I've brushed my hair before, but since I dreamed about it, which I don't usually do, my brain remembers it as the exception.
Dreams are kinda creepy, still. They often get the circumstances of an event wrong, but the emotions right. I swear you can almost learn more about yourself from your dreams; you can see what you'd do if the laws of physics and good manners didn't apply to you. |

Yes, I understand that hooting owls are natural, I know they are nocturnal. But I'm just emphasizing, that at this particular time, especially during this particular season (winter) when we don't really hear them as much as in the summertime, and then to only hoot one single time. It was just odd. That was all I'm saying. Plus, the guy died that very night.
As far as my dreams, it has happened to me twice most recently. Just before Thanksgiving I had a dream aboout a black cat. I would grab the cat (sorry, folks, I'm not a catlover, nothing personal meant to all of you who are) and I would put it out my back door, then everyytime I'd turn around, there it would be back in the house again. The week after Thanksgiving an elderly gentleman in my church passed away. Later I remembered counting how many times I had thrown that darn cat out. Yep, you guessed it. The exact number of days since I had that dream.
I'm not psychic, I never claimed to truly put much stock in that stuff. But I do believe that God (Not going to open any religious debates, either ) has ways of showing me that things are coming that I need to be prepared for. |

erm...Choco? You know that was you who swore, right?
Has anyone heard the one where if a raven flies straight at you, it is an omen of death?
Hmm...someone likes birds, it's starting to sound like they just made up a bunch of bird-related myths! lol. |

Okay, I didn't post this thread for it to blow out of proportion like this... with all the cursing.
I was just curious about animal-based legends. If a mod wants to delete this thread, I will understand. |
