black bears dont usually come out during the day, they are nocturnal, and it looks rather thin. |

Yes, we were all really surprised with how it acted. My dad said that it most likely has been hanging around the upper forest and got used to hearing the dogs. So finally, it just decided to take it's chances. EPIC FAIL. |

Wow That had to be really scary.
We just had a bear go strolling around in one the of pecan orchards in this area. He hung out all day - they finally called the Forestry Service and they tranquilized him and hauled him up to the Gila (Nat'l Forest). 250 lbs - HUGE for a Black Bear. Couldn't figure out what was up with him either.
A few years ago a family who has a land lease in the Gila had a black bear attack and kill a horse while they were gone. Forestry Service hunted him down and killed him.
We don't usually get bears down here on the Jornada - but then they don't usually get them in Hillsboro (where the bear was in the orchard) either, so you never know. We do have cougar, bobcat, coyote, rattlesnakes, badgers, owls... lots of wildlife. |

250 lbs! That's CRAZY for a black bear! That boy must have been a big one! But I'm not surprised either. I swear, they get bigger every year!
But Cosmosxx, we had two baby horses, a baby sheep, a goat, a baby dog, and an older dog at stake. If my dad hadn't shot this crazed bear, then they would all have been either injured, run to death, or attacked... I say the bear deserved it.... |

Holy crap, that would have given me a heart attack! I live in the mountains too and we get them around sometimes but like others have said, they are usually really skittish. It's scary how bold this one was, good thing your dad was there to shoot him and none of your critters got hurt! |

Ya, we were so incredibly lucky! I just hope next time things will go as well! If that bear had been let alive for just one more minute, we could have had dead livestock on our hands... |
