Mainly just manips, I wanted to try it, in truth. And for your second question, do you mean what program I use and what I do to bevel the text or use shadows or something like that? I'm a bit confused at the question. |

I use GIMP, but I'm fairly new at it and I don't do manips, I color linearts.
And I'm not much of a text person. |

welll. thanks fanta. xD
i personally find gimp more confusing than paint.net, ptsai, and photoshop (all of which i've user hurr), but it has some features that are different than any other art programs. :3
manips are a pain to do on gimp, imo. i download the free trials of often-called "better" art programs to make manips.. and especially add text to them.
if you understand the general idea of how to make a manip, it shouldn't be that difficult (i.e., you use the lasso/blah thing/whatever its called in gimp to choose what you want in the manip, and slihtly smudge the area around the background and the main item so it looks more natural), it shouldn't be much differentthan on any other art program you've used..
but you should remember that if you're cutting out a horse (or a similar animal), to cut out the main part of the body and either smudge or paint in the tail and mane.. and that smaller details (i.e., butterflies/shadows/reflections/etc.), can be added simply by drawing them in.
there's also many tutorials on dA for specific kinds of manips, if you want to just search on there.
sorry for making my post this long x.x

I use GIMP for everything. I don't find it confusing at all, but that might just be me. -shrug-
Something I do with text on a lot of manips: Duplicate the base layer twice. Highest is the text in white; in the middle is the text in black; the lowest is the text in the color/gradient/pattern you're using. Move the black layer down and to the left, and the white up and to the right (how much depends on the text you're using), then set them both to overlay.
To make your text be filled with a gradient/pattern, rather than a solid color, lock the layer and fill it in. =)
...And various things like that. Giving tips is easy but teaching someone how to make a full blown manip would take a VERY long time. Develop your own style; just play around with it for a while, maybe read a few tutorials, then try to make one. |

I think GIMP is a lot easier to use than other programs. I really liked GIMP for the filter effects, but it doesn't work on my computer anymore. If the layers aren't showing up press "ctrl and L" adn also try out the filter effects. |
