I'm kind of torn I guess...I like the idea of having a "GM", particularly with new RP-ers. It gives them structure, a plot, and limits their power while kind of dangling a carrot in the direction of the "goal" and giving them reasons to achieve that goal.
But at the same time, as I guess a "more advanced" RP-er, I like having brainstorming sessions with one or a couple other people, getting a vague goal in mind, and then writing from there with no one really "in charge". That really only works if each person has a sense of moderation though. Too many times I see characters with all powers and NO flaws. Which doesn't work. Character flaws make people interesting. It just isn't any fun with 10 people who are all THE AWESOMEST at everything. So yeah I guess in that case, having someone "in charge" of the action and the NPCs would come in handy.
I am having SO much fun with a character meme I found on DeviantART a couple months ago. It's "101 Questions You Should Be Able to Answer About Your Character"...from belief structure to childhood/past to physical appearance...I LOVE coming up with that kind of info. I can't play characters unless they're fully fleshed out lol |

I pretty much concur with that has been said on here already. I would consider myself an 'advanced roleplayer,' although I guess you don't much see that side of me! I've roleplayed on multiple sites, and once I would bust out a 500-word reply for every post...
The level of roleplay here is rather bleak, frankly. The literacy is disappointing. I know it really isn't all that important, but I don't think it is that much trouble to just check over what you've written before it is posted. Even more than that, I consider it ridiculous to post a one-sentence reply. My writing skill has improved dramatically by the 'advanced' roleplaying I have done. I started out like all you guys, a couple pieces here and there, but it grew as I moved on to different sites, which encouraged longer and more polished writing. This can happen on SBF, too, although again I admit that most people are roleplaying for the sake of entertainment only, and that is just fine.
As for characters and their personalities, yeah, ditto. I've found that practically all beginner roleplayers (including myself, when I was one), and even more 'advanced' roleplayers are all aiming for having the most powerful character. It makes you feel good to be on the top, for one, and it is more exciting at times. But after awhile you grow to discover the merits of flaws.
My most favorite character was a wolf named Metallic, and I loved her because she was flawed. A little nuts, even! She was a prisoner in her own pack, and it was a ball playing her, in her slightly twisted mind. I am seeing little of the great, original personality that made Metallic's character in SBF.
One thing I would like to point out, not meant to offend any players here:
Avoid females that are complete flirts and always get the best guys.
Avoid males that are swelling in confidence and power.
All I can say is try getting creative with your characters. It's really fun, anyway! |

I love the idea of a more demanding, literate, and creative roleplay here on SBF. I will not be joining this roleplay, even though it looks great, because I play animals only. But I'm glad you've started something; maybe it'll catch on! |

hmm thanks guys!
im gonna be adding "character flaw" to my forms.
I hate when people beg for powers! im adding in a few powers, but not every character gets one.
i hate when everyone whats the 'largest' wolf or something. so then you have like 10 people saying
"Dallas, the largest wolf in the pack..."
"Erin, the largest wolf in the pacl.."
when there can only be one largest wolf!
hmm im gonna try to get my Wolf rp to fit more of these standards you guys have set out. so any of you want to help me run it? it would help get an RP like what Bama had on VP. |

same.
like, i have a character Justin who is overconfident, but i make it a character flaw cause it make shim appear self-absorbed, conceited, and cocky. so i think thats ok...
yeah, the flirty girls that always get the best guys kinda annoy me too...

i know! i cant stand missing commas, and punctuation. i'm okay without a ' in like didn't, but i NEED periods and commas. i got firefox for this purpose. it underlines misspelled words so its easy to check over =] |

Agreed with the 'gets all the guys' and 'has all the powers' characters. Although I do think you can get away with powerful IF you balance it out with things they're not good at.
My favourite character to play (Jonathan Bartlett, non-sparkly vampire), for example, is quite intelligent and very good at his job (Head of Security at a "supernatural safe-haven" of sorts). Personality-wise, he's kind of a mix of Eric from True Blood and Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds (with a little bit of myself thrown in). Being so bookish and antisocial makes him completely socially awkward, though. He doesn't relate to other individuals on a personal level, which makes him come across as callous and uncaring. Nor is he physically strong- he'd probably lose in a fistfight. He's been deceived, he's been hurt badly, he's overlooked things that were right in front of his face...it's no fun playing a completely invincible character. While he's had moments of supreme bad-assery, he's also had moments of epic misjudgment and failure. He's probably my most powerful character, but for every strength, there's a weakness to balance it. It's when characters have nothing BUT bonuses, and nothing bad ever happens to them because they're too perfect that bothers me.
And uh...it's pretty clear I get WAY too far into my characters' heads lol Does anyone else hold conversations/argue with them? XD All of my characters very much have personalities/minds of their own and don't always play nicely with my plans for them lol |

really?
you are just acting out a character. you basically customize a character [depending on the RP] and act them out.
generally, RPs ask for the Name, Age, Appearance, and Personality. but make sure you dont make a Mary Sure, and make them perfect. Make sure to include a character flaw or two.
Some good character flaws:
bipolar: it annoys other characters
over-confident: it give you a self-absorbed, conceited, cocky appearance
its really fun to RP a variety of character types, just make sure you have the full idea of what a RP is about before joining.
Sample:
Justin opened his deep blue eyes. Letting out a soft groan, he rolled out of bed, disappointed that morning came so soon. He stretched his arms, and threw on a blue flannel shirt. he slipped on his dark wash jeans, his shoes, and walked up to the door.
Lily opened her brothers bedroom door, a triumphant look on her face. She grinned evilly at her brother. "Good Morning!" She said.
Justin squinted at Lily. she only acted 'nice' when something was up. he warily walked into the bathroom, expecting a bucket of water to fall on him. Nope. feeling pretty good, her turned on the sink to wash his face.
ssssssssss
Lily giggled. She ran downstairs quickly, running into the safety of her mothers arms.
Justin gaped. His face was dripping wet. He stared down at the sink faucets, a rubber band wrapped around one of them. the faucet was aimed at him. He shook his head like a dog, ashamed that he fell for such a petty trick. |
