hey, i was wondering why some of you players don't participate in RPs. i have been trying to find a way to make my RPs better, but then i realized i was only trying appeal to the RPing population. so why do some of you not participate in Rps, and what would make you want to join?
*MODs, i posted this here b/c i know that the people im trying to talk to wont be looking in Games/Gaming, they would be looking in Chicken Chatter. |

Some people don't like RPing, and they don't find it fun to do that. You can't really force them to play... |

I'm not being bad-tempered! I'm just telling you. You can't fix it at all.
Why do people also think when I say something I mean to put anyone down. I don't... |

" " is a face of displeasedness/disapproval. so when you make it at people it sets them off. if you hadnt made that face, i know i wouldnt have been set off. |

Come on, Trent. Even if that smily-face, which is labeled "confused" meant what you said, it doesn't give you permission to be openly cross. I don't mean to pick on you, but ChocolateGal did nothing wrong. |

I used to Rp. I still play dungeons and dragons. The reasons I don't RP here are as follows:
- All the characters are the same across the rps, or the same archetypes
- Bad timezones. If I do join a rp here I get one post in while everyone else gets about 15
- There are no rules other than "be nice to the creator". This inevitably degenerates into an argument about "But I said I was the biggest/fastest" etc
- No plot, or if there is a plot it's about how everyone has a very similar tragic past.
-RPs where everyone gets to be 'the best' at something just become boring. |

i understand that Fire, but it can still set people off. thats all.
Ferox, i agree with you. its annoying when people are nice to the creator to get a high ranking.
yes! i wouldnt mind someone having a nice, happy, history!!!
the timezone thing, that stinks =[
ok, thats all guys, thanks! |

With Ferox.
I actually enjoy RPing, it's an addiction with me. But I'm a bit of an RP purist
I don't get into most forum RPs though because there's no structure to them, no timeline, no action except what the characters themselves create. While one player is away, everyone else may go ahead by hours or days, leaving them behind. It's basically say what you want to say, do what you want to do within the rules, but no consequences, just drama between players. Many of them don't even give enough description of what their characters are doing to play off of them. They just talk. One or two line RP isn't the type of RP that keeps me interested.
There's also a lot of telling other characters what their own character is feeling or thinking, which to me isn't Roleplaying. Unless my character is clairvoyant or telepathic, they should have no way of knowing someone else's mood but by expression or action. Which is what brings in longer descriptions in an RP, making it more fun to read and get into, at least for me.
I once authored a D&D type forum RP, but the time and energy to run one like I like to be a part of, was too much for me and I had to let it die off. If you are inclined http://www.virtualpups.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=49323&highlight= was the one I was running and the type of RP I look for. Dang, reading back over it, wish I could find another like it that I didn't have to run LOL |

Duh, had a brain fart.. It's on VP, so you have to be a member of the general group and RPG group on that forum to view the topic. I was going to try and screenshot, but there's too much LOL |

Pretty much what Bama and Ferox said. I do forum RP on another site, with three (and a half) different characters who I love to death. It's basically me and just one other player (with three characters of her own), which is nice because we can chat about where we want the plot to go and then write it out gradually. Each of us does between two and three full paragraphs per post. I don't think I could play against someone who only left a line or two. Plus well...some of the stuff we do would definitely be against SBF forum rules. It's a supernatural RP, so blood and violence is pretty standard.
I also don't really like animal RPs. I get bored with them easily because let's face it, there's only so much you can do without opposable thumbs. XD |

It was a basic story line that the characters created/altered as they went along. I set it up so that there was a specific amount of character time the characters had in which to react to each other or to situations I presented to them as NPCs. So after I did an NPC post, I would state their characters had Xamount of time to react. If what their characters did took too much IC time, they might get left behind, but it allowed everyone to react to a situation before it moved onto the next "installment" by me.
Players were also given "special" incentive to remain true to the character profile they submitted to me before joining the RP. Their character may gain some special knowledge or item for staying in character or a brilliant work of RP.
The time consuming part of this kind of RP for the "game master"/person heading the RP, is that the characters can and often do change the plot, might even make it non existent and create a new one by their actions alone. The one leading must be able to adapt and think ahead and be prepared for what the characters might do. For instance, they may not open the door you intend them to open, instead go out a window, or down a return vent for the furnace or even bust through a wall. By the 5th or 6th page on my RP, the characters had already gone a different direction than what I'd originally planned. There was also a LOT of private messaging going on as individual characters gleaned some bit of info others were not aware of because of their "RP" ability. Or asked questions about the rooms/situation that perhaps their character might have noticed, etc. |
