Good grammar does not equal big, fancy words folks. Just so you know. You don't need a thesaurus to sound intelligent.

No, I'm not implying anything about the OP's post since I agree wholeheartedly with everything they've said. Some of the responses though... xD They made me giggle.

Persons in administrative positions within this entertainment enterprise must, in all instances, use appropriate verbiage and maintain a semblance of admirable erudition. In every correspondence, be it auditory or transcribed, I assure you, we are being as guileless and forthcoming with you, the consumer, and with our own persons, as is humanly possible.

Now, that's what I sound like if I use a thesaurus. I do get the complaint or am advised from time to time that I use big words. Whether you are talking about me or not in this post, I don't know. Wink

I've been a heavy duty reader for going on 30 years. On average, I read 2 or 3 books every week. On a good week, with no distractions, I have been known to finish upwards of 10 books. I read different types of books from different classes of authors, just about anything I get my hands on with the exception of romance novels. While big words may sound pretentious, they really aren't, I just happen to forget the first rule of journalism. K.I.S.S. Sometimes, I even purposely use "big" words to lighten things up a bit. Don't be afraid to poke fun at me if you think I'm getting up on a high horse.

To the topic at hand... I use LOL, OMG, and similar chatspeak when in a crunch or to convey my feelings. Face it, LOL tells you quickly that I'm tickled by something much better and faster than typing "Laughing Out Loud" or "that made me laugh in real life". Complete sentences of chatspeak are something else. To me, that shows a lack of respect for the reader, that the poster couldn't even take the time to spell things out, expecting me to decipher what they mean.

Bad grammar I can tolerate better, since not everyone does very well at English or reads much. However, when someone puts a piece up as a literary work, such as a story or a post on an RP, at least an effort should be made to be as correct as possible.

I think the best way to combat chatspeak is to lead by example. If someone is interested in being part of the community, they will notice that while their posts aren't responded to very well, other, well written posts are. They will either conform or post to ask why, which is an invitation to politely explain, not to make accusations, of why their posts aren't answered.

Oh, did I also admit that I'm sometimes accused of being long winded? Laughing

I am definitely strict with myself when it comes to spelling and grammar. I naturally feel the need to ensure that every post is well composed, with commas and properly spelled words. I generally re-read all my posts several times before they are even posted. Like our lovely Alabama, I am a big reader and enjoy writing. It is quite possible that my perfectionism with words is simply due to the fact that I am a person that appreciates the language arts.

I do use LOL quite frequently, mainly just for the fact that it makes me sound more loose and relaxed in a post. I tend to seem uninviting otherwise because my sentences can be too legalistic, or abrupt, if you know what I mean. Other than the LOLs, I use the usual english format in my posts. Though it can be exasperating, I'm not bothered too much to see someone use improper spelling and grammar, unless it is in a RPG. That's just one of my pet peeves. I want everybody to make long posts and have every word and comma placed correctly, but obviously that is unrealistic and unfair to all the players.

Anyway, I'm glad ChocolateGal has brought this up. It's good to know there are other people who feel like me! Kudos! Very Happy

Okay, a bit off topic, but might be fun anyway.. Try breaking a word you don't understand down into separate parts, compare the parts to words you know that may be similar and with the way it's used in a sentence, you might get close to the meaning.. Assuming you don't have a dictionary handy. Laughing

verbiage.. verb + iage : a verb is a word used to describe an action. You would probably be safe to assume it has something to do with words and explanations.

semblance.. sembl + ance : resemble, disassemble, reassemble. Might be something to do with how things appear or how they are put together.

erudition.. Even I would have to use a dictionary on this one. Embarassed Gotta love a thesaurus for teaching new words. It basically means to be educated or well spoken.

auditory.. audi + tory : audio, auditorium. Means having to do with hearing or perhaps a verbal/spoken exchange.

transcribe.. trans + scribe : scribe, scribble, transcript. Probably something to do with writing down for the record.

forthcoming.. forth + coming : coming forth, coming forward. Most likely means volunteering information or revealing everything.

Taking two years of Latin in high school was also a tremendous help in understanding English and other "romance" languages since they all have Latin as a common basis.

I'm a grammar Nazi too. I can't stand it when people don't use punctuation and decent spelling. That was one of the things I used to like about SBF, everyone wrote properly. Now though, it seems like I'm reading something from icanhazcheezburger, except not as witty. -.-
