at school in our Herpotolgy Dept we have two Red-Tailed boas. Deuce and Ophelia....they've never bitten anyone. we use Deuce to demonstrate to Kindergartners b/c he's so laid back. Ophelia gets more freaked out so we never put her around our necks just in case she gets afraid and accidentally kills someone |

Ophelia once wrapped her tail around my wrist kind of tight b/c she was a little nervous. Scared the life out of me. The strength is incredible |

Ophelia and Deuce are both around 6 feet. It was so funny...we had a day where all the campus orginizations had displays and let people see what they were all about. So the herpetology club brought the two boas out. You should have seen how some people flipped out! It was so funny! |

I love reptiles....
We have no snakes here so its illegal to have one as a pet, there aren't even any in the zoos etc etc...
It's illegal to keep our native lizards like the tuatara and geckos as pets...Quite a few people have wild caught skinks, I did as a child...Loved my little "Buttons" lol. He/she used to enjoy swimming which is weird for a skink...
You can get the Australian blue tongues and beardies here, not 100% on if you need a permit...I'd LOVE an eastern water dragon, fell in love with them on my first trip to Brisbane...They're everywhere! |

But then I also think that about snakes
Just another pet I'll never get to have >.< |
Haha! Me too Vitani. My friends mom just calls me the living dictionary
Quote: | I'm not sure how I feel about people keeping native Australian mammals as pets. My gut feeling tells me its wrong, no matter how cute they are, and I don't understand how they got into the hands of the public without a zoo liscence. They're quite special and not domestic. Snakes and lizards are complex enough (coincidentally, no bearded dragon was ever imported to the US legally. They're all bred from illegal stock). People don't need to keep their own zoo. |
Well Ferox, It's not illegal but they are banning them in some states. However, you are aloud to keep up to three breedable females before you need a license. Their a type of possum and related to kangaroos so I suppose your right about keeping them as pets but their also like chinchillas and can be bought as pets |
