Standards can be a bear to groom when they're young and learning - it's so easy to forget that they are RETRIEVING stock - but they're so worth the effort. They train remarkably fast and retain that information well. I don't see nearly as many Standards as I did even 5 years ago with the endless new "Doodle" mixes (thanks to the thousands of backyard breeders out there). Thank goodness some of them retain their poodle smarts!

However, I usually relish the many, many ways in which they can be groomed... Euro ears, round head, clean face, clean feet, Continental, Town-and-Country clip, "Bat" tail, "lamb" clip (longer length on the legs than that on the body), English saddle, Portuguese Water Dog-style, "Bikini", a.k.a. "Miami" clip, the list of options goes on and on and on, all fun to do with a nice, crisp coat. There are tons of Standards that have earned a special place in my heart... in fact, there are several I groom exclusively, and they're among my favorite clients!
