So wait, why did neverwinterCC win five times? Isn't that a little unfair? Meh, manipulations are not appreciated here at all clearly.

Technically she only placed twice.

Essentially the way the prizes worked is that there were three lists: the first was the list of all entries. the second was the list of all entries that met my criteria - this was the 'short list' from which I picked the winners. the amount of time or effort spent on the entry was not a deciding factor. nor was the amount of skill required to achieve the final effect. what was a deciding factor was what the final effect actually was. so an entry that took no time or skill to achieve, but by some fluke ended up looking really fantastic, would naturally do much better than one that took a great deal of effort and skill, but just didn't end up working. (I'm not saying any of the entries were like this, I'm just using opposite extremes as an example.)
not being on this list is not a judgement on your skill. all it says is that it didn't meet my criteria.
the third list was, of course, the short-listed entries that ended up placing. these entries did not just meet my criteria, but were also really fantastic. there are several more criteria than what I've mentioned here, but they are difficult to put into words.

Since I said multiple entries were fine it would be unfair if the award of one prize to a player automatically disqualified all their other entries, regardless of how deserving their other entries were.

The thing about manipulations is that they require an exceptional amount of skill and finesse, and that's just to get a half decent one that doesn't have crop lines or look tacky. To be of 1st place quality they actually require more time, effort, skill and finesse than other equally good artistic creations of different types. This is an example of a manip of such a quality: click here.

although the manip you entered was put together quite well and was clearly quite skilled, it lost marks because the overall effect just didn't 'work'. Areas which you scored poorly in included composition, colour, and lighting. It is for this reason that you didn't manage to get short-listed. There were plenty of pieces that scored better than yours that didn't manage to get short-listed, so it's not as if you are alone in this.
If you are open to constructive criticism I'll be happy to message you to detail all the points of your image that worked or didn't work, and why, and hopefully give you some material to work on which will help you improve your image manipulation skills.

I'm a little...surprised about the winners too--probably not what I would've chosen (not saying I would've chose mine, before anyone goes to accuse me of being a sore loser). I guess I just tend to favor composition over realism or something.

Love the photographs, though. Wink

Congrats, folks

Good job and hopefully I get a chance to see more of everyone's personal projects, I was surprised at the variety that showed up (and stared lovingly at the model horses). Don't take placings too hard, they don't mater so long as you like what you're doing.
