Enduring Journey- Chapter 1


He walks beside me never once shifting his gaze from the path that lies before us. I wonder why we are walking this same path again. The journey was not pleasant last time we traveled through. His hand grasps mine as we walk in silence. I look up at his strong yet soft face and wonder yet again why I am here with him and he with me. We are similar in so many ways but opposite in many ways as well. We both are too complex for our own good but we love each other even more because of this.We turn another corner while he is still staring straight ahead. I think about asking him all these things that I have thought of but I change my mind when I remember the stillness of the moment. To us quietness is sacred and rare and only comes when we are away.Being away comes with a price that is different every time. I have been warned time and time again to stay away from him but I cannot and will not. Being with him makes me feel complete wheras being at home is not where I belong.One of these days being at home will mean being with him. That thought brings a smile to my lips and a sweet giggle escapes. For the first time in a while he brings his gaze to meet mine and he smiles without asking questions before returning his gaze to the path. It seems he understands me without needing words to communicate. It has always been that way ever since we met four years ago. I did not even know his name and he did not know mine but we understood each other from that day on. Finally we come up to the biggest hill that I have ever seen. We made it last time........barely. I feel my eyes fill with panic and I glance over at him. He responds by staring at the hill before us and squeezing my hand reassuringly. I gulp and look up above us yet again. I think of the challenges we faced last time and I feel tears well up in my eyes before I feel the wet in my cheeks and the heaving of my shoulders. That is when he turns,places his hands upon my shoulders, and looks into my eyes for what seems an eternity. That is when I know that we are facing hard times and struggles but that everything is going to be okay as long as we are together. Shortly after we take the first steps into this enduring journey.

Chapter 2

As we take the first steps up this mountain a thousand thoughts swirl through my mind. I do not know why we are here and for the first time I feel frightened of him.... of us. He stops abruptly and looks at me like he can see through me. Is it possible that he can? I silently scold myself for wondering if it is possible. We learned long ago that literally anything is possible. Anything....... That is when I realize how long he has been holding that gaze. It seems like hours before I feel a peace wash over me. He drops his gaze when the peace comes and we walk in peace with each other and with our first struggle behind us. There will be many more to come but we will come through. I know we will........
