I saw the moon shining on the water, like a ghost of the past I knew would haunt me forever. That one boy, I don't know how anyone could call him a boy, had changed my life. Two years ago, I had met him. Derek Wheylon. He was the one thing that kept my life moving, that kept my life from being full of sorrow.
Yet here I was, leaving forever.
My parents had made me leave my home, just because they were selfish and got a divorce. And I had to pay for it. I was leaving my home, my friends, and Derek.
Derek wasn't anything like I had ever met or seen. He had eyes, as hard and silver as frozen steel, and hair, that looked so sharp and golden, it looked menacing. He looked non-human, an angel brought down to personally keep me here, keep me going.
Just as the boat was about to get across the lake, I saw him. He was in the trees, right beside the docks.
I jumped out of the boat and ran to him, ignoring the calls my pleading mother yelled after me. I ran and ran, but it seemed like I wasn't getting any closer. Like he wasn't there. Finally, I didn't know where I was.
The trees surrounded me, their branches reaching out to me like they would wrap around me, pull me away from him. I yelled, but I knew I was to far away for my mother or Derek to hear me. Instead, the answering cry of coyotes replied. It was spring, and all the coyotes were starved, and I knew they would take anything they could get, even humans. I looked around for anyone, anything that could help, as I heard the predators approaching. I knew I was done, lost in my need for the boy that had picked me up off my feet.
Then he was there. |
