I received an e-mail from an old friend the other day, and my old trainer made the decision to humanely euthanize her Morgan mare, Melody.
I used to ride her lots when I was younger-- she was a very strong horse and needed an experienced rider, but she was an amazing little mare.
This is a copy of the e-mail:

You've been sent a Flickr Mail from [friendnamehere]:

:: Sad news =(
On Tuesday, 2008 Jess had to make the sad
decision to put Melody down. She wasn't doing too well.
She had founders and with the arthritis in her knee getting
worse too, she just wasn't getting any better. All the
horses were taken one at a time to see her and to say
goodbye, and some of the horses would not go near her.
Aria was trying to rouse her mother and make her wake up,
but obviously it didn't work.
I just thought I'd let you know since you used to ride at
[barn name here] and in case anyone you know still rides there or
used to ride there or anything- you could let them know.

Aww that is so sad when an animal that you love has to be put down, but just remember she wasn't doing good and was probably in a lot of pain. She is in a better place now and out of pain and she is at the Rainbow Bridge playing with all the other animals and waiting for the day when you can come and ride her again. I know that you may be sad now but just remember all the good times you had with Melody and that she'll always be with you in your heart. Did you ever get any pictures of her? If you did than you have those to remember her by too. |

Thanks. And yeah, I know the decision for her to be euth'd was for a good reason. I would rather have her put out of her misery than have her suffer. |

So sorry to hear about Melody...Its sad when a cherished friend passes, but it gets a little easier to bear knowing that in the face of such a terrible choice, she made the right one and helped her old friend go quietly without any extra discomfort or prolonging her life past the point where she could enjoy it...
*hugs* |
