Today when I came home, my parents told me that our neighbors had shot our dog! Sad I didn't really know how to react. We got the dog about a month and a half ago. She was sweet and wouldn't hurt anyone! And he shot her! I still can't beleive it. Now I'm worried that maybe he'll shoot our other dog! And I really LOVE our other dog "Bratterratt" (My user name is after hers). Can you beleive some one would be so cruel as to shoot a little harmless dog that had wandered into their yard to say hi! I still can't beleive it. And what makes me even more mad, is they knew it was our dog! I'm crushed.

if your in the US then sorry they got strong property laws and it was probably perfectly legal, you as the owner is responsible to keep your animals on your own property, and if you know you have neighbours like that even more so. If not your tresspassing and in US thats illigal, in some states property owners can even shoot humans for tresspasing on their property.

I am sorry for your loss though, but from looking around the nett its become aparent to me that a lot of petowners in US are far from as responsible and in control of their animals as they should be.

It would be illigal in my country too unless the dog was agressive or damaging property in a way that cant be stoped in other ways (to shoot it that is), but it also aint legal to let your dog roam around to hazle others, so if you had been there you would goten a call and a warning from the cops, and after enough of that they may end up seasing your dogs, upon which they can do what they want with them, be it rehoming if they are rehomable, or puting them down if not. And yes i said dogs, even if only one of your dogs have a track record of being problematic, they can take all, they can also when your dogs is a problem lay restrictions on you that you have to fullfill to get to keep the dogs.

Poor laws on animal holding in US most sertainly is the main problem all over the slate causing the issues you have from overpopulation to roaming dogs in US.

So yeah i am terrible sorry for the death of the dog, but you and your family was responsible for keeping this from happen by securing your dog when outside, either by supervising it 100%, having it in a secure chain, or a sufficient dog yard (1'5'' into the ground and 6'5'' into the air, with padlocked gate so no one else could let it out).

You know what Tanitsja, I let my dogs run loose because where I live, there are TONS of bears! If I didn't then my little brothers and sisters would be attacked and killed by bears! Is that what you thinks is a better choice? We only have 2 neighbors, both of which have had dogs that ran loose, and no one ever even bothered to complain about their dogs. I just think that our neighbors should have been less cruel to the animal that kept bears out of their yard as well. I'm not goin' to argue with you anymore because I don't think you get this situation. Thanks Cecelia for your sympathy. I'm really sorry about your cousin's dog. At least I know that he/she is in a better place now.

I don't think Tanitsja was trying to say it in a horrid way. Things come through differently online. Sorry for everybodies losses, at least your dog died by being noble, of keeping bears out. You can always think of them as your hero for saving your families from the bears. Hope everything is OK.

Whether or not you let them run off leash because of bears, if the dog left your property your family is responsible. In many places in the US it's legal to shoot dogs that are harassing livestock or wildlife besides.

As Tanitsja, I'm sorry for your loss but the property owner isn't at fault here.

The dog wasn't harassing these people or their livestock (they don't even have any pets!) She was coming over to greet them when they got home from work! She loved people and just wanted everyone to love her too!

Maybe they just aren't dog peopleXD But it's not a question of whether they /can/ shoot the dog, it's whether they are /would/ shoot the dog. It seems really harsh and cruel. Unless it's attacking you, why kill it? Did they warn you about keeping the dog away from their house or anything?

No. They had said that they had seen the dog around, and it had pooped once in their yard. But we cleaned the poop. And they hadn't seemed that mad about it then. It's confusing.

It's probably legal, but I hope they feel bad about it. They don't seem like really bad people, so they should at least apologize. Good luck, and if dead cats and dogs go to the same place... My cat will probably meet your dog soonXD

I don't think they'll apologize. They hid the body so that we wouldn't know they shot her. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Well, that sounds like they felt bad and didn't want to tell you, or they didn't want to get in trouble. Or both. I dunno:\ Ive got to go to bed, but this the first time someone has actively chatted with on the forumsXD It's pretty cool. Good night Cool

Oh Bratt!! I am SO sorry! That is horrible! I am appalled that someone would let even the thought of shooting a dog cross their mind, tresspassing or not. That makes no sense. have you confronted them about it? Urgh, people like that make me want to scream!! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Thirding Jinxx and Tanitsja here. If the dog leaves your property, others can do what they want with it in most areas. It's the owner's responsibility to keep the dog on the property, whether through training or physical fencing.

I'm of the opinion that unless your family is outside needing the protection, the dog should NOT be left out unattended. I don't think you've mentioned what kind of dog it was, but if it's large enough to fend off bears, then I can completely understand the neighbor misunderstanding. Most people that see a large dog running towards them are not going to wait to see if it's friendly before protecting themselves. Such is the reality of US dog law.
