well the vegetable chategory is a term of comon folk talk, its not a scientific term as such...its a clasification we use in cullinary...and the tomato as such is a vegitable (akin to if enough people say a breed is a breed it is so, or if the breeders themself say its a breed it is a breed logic defination)
the debate i know come up for wheter we sort it wrong based on scientific evidence that i may indeed be a fruit...as such i went looking to find what they found scientificly
and acording to wiki (summed up in my own words bellow)
the tomato corectly scientificly sorted...its a fruit or more precisely a berry
so scentificly its a berry
on comon terms language where comon people do not use the same definations as the science (ie we sort plants into corn, herbs&spices, berries, fruit, and vegetables as distinct different usage) the tomato is cullianary a vegetable
and neither is actualy wrong because the two are different sets of terms, because we are talking about corect scientific family relation based on genetic for the one, and for the other genetics dont come into it as we are purely talking about culianary usage of a plant
so i am sure there are more then the tomato who between the two chategories of taging has different sorting based on wheter you view it from a scientific view, or a cullinary view
as such its not an either or, but more of a question wheter you want the cullinary or the scientific answer neither is more wrong then the other
another typical example of this is the rosehip, scientificly its a fruit, cullinary it most often get chategories as a herb because the most comon usage for it is in tea or from olden days also in medical usage |

Well, after reading Amara's article, I'm pretty sure that their opinion of a tomato is going to be that it is a fruit, wouldn't you think? |
