Well I took Ginger (a 7 year old golden) to the local vet school's orthopedic specialist today because she has been limping on her left front leg, and it turns out she has bilateral (both arms) elbow dysplasia. She's only 7, so its kinda depressing that something like this has set in so soon. I've got some Cosiquin and an anti-inflamitory for her to help her be more comfortable for the time being. There is not really anything we can do to fix it unless we do elbow replacement surgery, with will cost around 6k per elbow, so that's not really an option. *sigh*

If anyone knows of a good site on elbow dysplasia I would appreciate a link.

Aww. I'm sorry Queso. I hope your dog gets better with the medication you have for her now.

That surgery costs a lot. I didn't realize it would be 6K per elbow >.<
Good luck with her though. =]

Wow that sucks. Elbows must be way different from hips o.O My dog dislocated her hip and had to have surgery a couple years ago, and it DEFINITELY didn't cost that much to have the FHO. Hopefully the meds will work though.

Here's a pretty straightforward info source from the UC Davis vet school- especially the surgical option...their cost estimate isn't nearly that high, so you might want to shop around for a second opinion:

A lot of animals with degenerative joint disease can be managed very nicely with medication and physical therapy. Hopefully your dog will be one of those.
