They didn't take him cause they couldn't house him. He wasn't in any pain for most of the time he spent with us. If he was he would of wailed all the time. And he could run like a V8. Could a sick cat do that? |

I'm sorry if you thought I was doing this ... I'm just saying that you said he was sick ... so he obviously wasn't feeling great. & Not all cats, or animals in general, wail or cry when they are in pain. My cat had very bad arthritis & we know he was in pain, but he never cried out. My dog has had so many problems with her foot that for about 1 week, she only walked on 3 legs. However, she NEVER cried out.
& I'm not turning against you ... I was trying to help ... geez, I'm sorry okay? |

Actually, he probably wouldn't have. See, if a sick or injured animal makes noise, it draws predators to it. Domesticated animals still have this instinct, and so even if they are in excruciating pain, they are usually completely silent in a last-ditch effort to stay alive and keep from being killed by something bigger. Having seen dozens of medial emergencies, from major injury to emaciation, I can say that animals RARELY whine or cry. They may yelp in instances of sudden pain, but nothing more.
My 17 year old cat had late-stage renal (kidney) failure and still demanded to go outside every day. He went out until the day he died, so yes, animals can also function relatively normally even when their body condition is bad. Cancer is not something that's curable, and so even if they could have bought him a few months or even a year, it's not something a shelter can ask an adopter to take on. Cancer is not only VERY expensive to treat, the animal's lifespan is shortened. Believe me, I wish ASPCA/Humane Society/rescue groups could treat and save every animal, but it just isn't possible. Many run only on public donations. They can't spend money on an animal they can't fix, and if the animal's quality of life isn't going to be 100%, it's better to humanely euthanize the animal than force it to survive only to live in pain later on.
Yes, it sucks, but you can't save them all. I found a cat two weeks ago, skinny, completely blind, and possibly deaf. I took him to the NO KILL shelter I work in, where he got fluids and immediate vet care. We named him Alecto, which is Greek for "unceasing". Last Tuesday, the medical coordinator called me into her office. Alecto's blood work came back, and he was suffering from renal failure. He wasn't holding fluid, wasn't eating, and was getting weaker. She wanted my permission to have him put to sleep. He wasn't my cat and I'd only known him for a week, but it still killed me to say it was alright. It wasn't fair to make him suffer needlessly.
I know how upsetting it can be, but remember, the shelter staff has to take the rest of its population into consideration. If they spent thousands of dollars on this cat, treated the ringworm, did chemotherapy or surgery for the cancer that may have given him a couple years at most, how many healthy cats would be euthanized because that money couldn't go towards their care? How many cats would they put at risk of getting ringworm, since it can spread through the air? They couldn't put their population in jeopardy because of one cat that may only survive a few months anyways. Until the overpopulation problem is solved by people spaying and neutering their pets, shelters are going to have to make decisions. It's not fair, but it's life. |

and Khol, gosh i wish there was a NO KILL place in Australia. That really scares me cause my little kitty hobbles on one leg and he is only 8. Mum wont even take him out to the vet to get him checked out. Obviously he won't let us touch his joints. I'm that kind of unlucky person. He's got a shorter life expectancy cause he was feral.
This wasn't just a cat it was a loved by humans since he was born and returned their affection to anyone that came along. He was special |

You try to be nice to people and make them feel better and it comes and bites you in the ***. Last time I'm sympathetic to anyone.
There's lots of things I'd like tyo say but I wont. I don't want to cause arguments.
I am sorry you had to put the cat to sleep. But next time I'll know to keep my sympathies to myself. |

I feel really bad cause now someone has said that they had a missing cat. Same as what he was. Sorry everyone. I should never gone onto sandboxfarm. |
